Natural Light Portraits

What is a natural light portrait?

A natural light portrait is shot just using available light, otherwise known as daylight! It uses only natural light sources such as sunlight or ambient light from windows. The kind of light used can vary greatly, from open shade to back lighting to early morning or late afternoon sun. And everything in between.

Natural light portraits provide context and environment. This can be purely aesthetic to create a mood or texture, or it can be used to create a scenario which describes the subjects business and their relationship to the environment.

Why choose a natural light portrait?

Natural light portraits taken in diffused light or at golden hour can have a soft flattering look that enhances skin tones and reduces harsh shadows. Or bright sun can be used to create a more dramatic portrait.

Daylight portraits also provide context and environment. This can create depth and texture as well as provide an element of story telling. For example, a chef surrounded by the ingredients she uses describes who she is and what she does in an organic and creative way and can be used in branding and advertising.

How does it work?

Natural light portraits are very much a collaboration, so I'm all about talking to find out more about your requirements and to explain how I work.

We can use your premises or an environment that provides context to describe what you do or create a mood. Or you might just be looking for something relaxed or informal that would benefit from natural light, either inside or outside. Either way get in touch and we can talk about suitable locations and the kind of mood that would work best for your shoot.
